The Skin You’re In

A few years ago my family and I gathered at my sister-in-law’s home to celebrate her birthday. She is a classy, beautiful lady, inside and out. You can tell by looking at her that she takes care of herself. She’s got great skin and takes pride in everything she does. She is truly a woman of good taste in fashion and home décor.

While sitting around the dinner table talking, I announced that I had started writing a blog entitled “My Age, Not Your Business.” Some thought this was an interesting topic, although some had no response, probably just because. One guest said “You look fabulous. I would tell the world my age if I were you.” Great compliment… She’s a few months older than I am and maybe she didn’t mind anyone telling her age. With me, the zipped lip is in place regarding the age thing. You know…my age…my business.  Maybe one day when I am ninety years old and hopefully looking at least twenty years younger, I may tell too. Who knows? My Aunt Eunice, a  few of my clients, and a couple of friends are in the ‘My Age, Not Your Business’ club. This is our motto and we are sticking by it.

In another blog post, I talked about starting with good clean skin and moisturizing is a must. It is the foundation of staying beautiful. Most beauty books will tell you that when you get in your forties you should start using night creams and serums because as you get older, you tend to lose elasticity, and your skin becomes dryer due to a lack of collagen. However, I truly believe that early preventive measures are the best bet for great skin. I started taking care of my skin at age fifteen. However, I believe that if we start skin care even as early as our teens, twenties, or thirties, we will have fewer regrets in our fifties, sixties, or beyond. We can avoid dryness which can lead to wrinkles, so moisturizing should be a priority. Even if oily skin is an issue, there are oil-free moisturizers for your skin type. Remember, it’s never too late to make some improvements.

When I wear makeup, and I wear makeup every day,  I like wearing mineral makeup, and I also use a primer. A primer allows me to wear less makeup, my makeup lasts all day, and it does not clog my pores. One of my neighbors is retired and she told me a few years ago that she was  72 years old. I could not believe it because she looks so terrific. She keeps her hair cut in a cute and current pixie hairstyle. Her hair is snow white and glistens in the sun. She is beautiful and her skin is smooth and almost wrinkle-free. Certainly not the face of a 72-year-old. I see her walking every morning at around 6 am. I see her working in her yard on a regular basis. She stays active. Sometimes I even see her outside playing ball with her grandchildren. She truly enjoys her life and keeps her body moving. That is what I call true beauty. She eats right, gets exercise, drinks lots of water, and takes care of her skin.

Comparatively, I see younger women, some in their 40s and 50s who look much older and some in their 60s who could easily pass for the late ’70s or 80s. Their skin looks as if they probably don’t even own a jar of anything that resembles a cream. If they walked, it is probably from the car to the pharmacy counter to pick up a prescription.

What does true beauty have to do with all this? EVERYTHING! Did you know that if you just change your nutritional habits by eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, greens especially, exercising, and drinking alkaline water, you can literally flush toxins from your body which will lead to good skin? It is all relative. My invitation to you is to get moving. Just because you’re over 40 doesn’t mean you have to look anywhere near it, doesn’t mean you have to feel it, and certainly, it doesn’t mean that the world has to know it. See how I brought that subject right back to ‘My Age, My Business?’

Until next time. Have a fabulous day on purpose!
