An Aging Female Is a Matter of Birth…

However, being a beautiful, ageless, fit & fabulous woman is a matter of choice. That is my line and I am sticking with it.

When I was twenty-three, I enrolled in an interior design class.  My instructor was a beautiful black woman with golden highlights in her curly hair, and the smoothest skin ever.  She told us that she was thirty-seven years old.  At age twenty-three I saw the age of thirty-seven as mature, old, maybe even ancient. I admired the fashionable clothes she wore, the shoes that accented her feet, and the way she wore her hair and makeup. Her makeup simply enhanced what God had given her. It was not too much, and not too little, just natural-looking. Her hair and skin glistened when the sunlight kissed her face.

When she told us she was thirty-seven, I remember saying, “Wow! I hope I look that good when I get that old.” I am sure she was probably thinking ” This poor child, what is old about thirty-seven?’ Of course, thirty-seven is not old to anyone unless you are under thirty.  We asked her so many questions that the interior design class became a skincare class. She told us that it was important that as you got older, skincare had to be a priority.  It was a habit to adapt and not to be taken lightly.  That little tidbit stayed with me and is still the first thing that I pay attention to even to this day.

I am passionate about skincare and I have always been intrigued when finding natural skincare products. I love wearing makeup to enhance what God has given me. However, what I love more is great skin.

One of the first steps to good skin is taking care of it. When I was in beauty school, my instructor told us to think of our skin as a canvas.  Envision the healthy skin that you want to reveal. My face is the first thing that I see in the morning, so I spend some time pampering myself each morning, paying close attention to the health of my skin. It is the first thing that other people see as well when they look at me.

Even when I don’t wear makeup to cover the imperfections, and I do have some, I am determined to take care of the ‘skin I’m in. Not only is the skin on my face important, but the care of the whole body is important. Soft, smooth skin feels wonderful.  I also pay attention to my feet, my hands, my knees, and my elbows.

I stand in front of the mirror and look, really look at myself. Any dry patchy skin has to go! I use a vitamin-based cleanser to clean and gently exfoliate my body, which is gentle enough for my face as well.  Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the outer layer of skin and improves the appearance as well.   It is important to consider your skin type and be careful when you exfoliate so that you don’t damage your skin.  Exfoliation is not for everyone.  However, it is important to find solutions for your skin type.

After exfoliating, I then tone and moisturize.  One of my favorite toners is witch hazel and one of my favorite body lotions is baby lotion sometimes mixed with coconut oil.  These are some of my go-to products and witch hazel has been a favorite since I was fifteen years old.  I get up early so that I have time for this ritual.  I don’t allow anything to interfere with my self-care time.

I am not endorsing any specific products at this time and over the years I have used products right out of my kitchen to smooth my knees and elbows, give myself facials, condition my hair, soften my feet, soak my body, and the list goes on.  The sources are endless!

My point in this blog is that I want to encourage commitment to taking the time to strive to be ageless, and beautiful because  I believe that most women, somewhere under the dry skin if that is you, the oily skin, the sensitive skin, the ‘I don’t know what to do with my hair, my skin, my body, myself if that is you, is a beautiful woman who wants to emerge. Please let her out.

Until next time. Have a fabulous Day on purpose!
